Climate

GroenLinks believes in a city that generates its own energy, stores it smartly and distributes it fairly. Energy cooperatives are our natural partners in this. They help lower energy bills and ensure that energy remains in the hands of people, not corporations. We are making the energy transition together, with care for people, nature, and affordability.

What we will do over the next four years

  • We will do what is needed. As the capital city, we commit ourselves fully to national and international climate goals. This means that by 2030, Amsterdam will have reduced its CO₂ emissions by 60% compared to 1990.
  • We will invest in sustainable energy. We will install more solar panels and wind turbines and build public heat networks so neighbourhoods can move away from gas in an affordable way.
  • Insulation remains a top priority. We will expand the insulation programme across the entire city. The municipality will continue working with energy coaches and fix teams, helping residents and businesses through collective insulation and sustainability projects.

What we have already achieved

  • Tough on major polluters. We made binding agreements with the ten largest emitters to drastically cut their emissions. The city’s position on Schiphol Airport has also fundamentally changed: Amsterdam now advocates for fewer flights, a ban on night flights and private jets, and better working conditions for staff.
  • Moving away from gas. Through our insulation programme, we provided 50,000 in-home energy consultations in the neighbourhoods that needed them most, saving households an average of €300 to €600 per year. In total, this has saved €15 to €30 million for low-income households.
  • Clean electricity. We built wind turbines in the port area and installed over 300,000 solar panels. Through the city’s “solar bank”, 1,000 social housing households have received free second-hand solar panels.
